FIELD TRIAL REPORT
The Irish Setter Club of Victoria runs a Novice Pointer and Setter Field Trial and an Open Pointer and Setter Field Trial on the Queens Birthday in June of each year. A number of other clubs also conduct trials for pointers and setters, both in Victoria and interstate, which makes up a busy calendar from April to July.
Any interested persons are welcome to attend the field trials and walk in the gallery to watch the dogs in action and the judge officiating. I can be contacted on 03-53692286 prior to any trial and will advise the meeting place and time to meet.
Irish Setters do their breed proud in the trials and have their good share of wins. These setters are bred from generations of field trial working dogs with bloodlines from U.K., Ireland, Scandinavia and Australia.
There are pups from these lines recently born which will be ready to go to homes in early December this year (2006).
In field trials judges look for a profile of skills when evaluating a dogs performance; ground coverage, style ,speed, obedience, nose, stamina, biddability, finding and bird handling ability, backing ability, staunchness to name a few. It is hard fought competition at field trials that keeps gundogs up to the mark and gives field trialling its place in the varied world of field sports. Field trialling commenced over 140 years ago and has bequeathed the legacy of the marvellous dogs that we still breed and compete with today.

FIELD TRIAL NEWS
from Denis Everard
Following four years of drought in Victoria, the State received a good Spring rain last year, followed by good rain this autumn. This has resulted in good stubble and grass paddocks that in many cases are holding stubble quail, the game birds on which Setter and Pointer trials are held.
It has been disappointing that the Irish Setter Club Field Trials have been cancelled for the last three years due to the lack of game. However, I am confident the trials will go ahead this year and schedules are printed in Irish indeed.
Other clubs that conduct pointer and Setter field trials in Victoria are: The Victorian Gundog Club, The Central Highlands Working Gundog and Retrieving Trial Club and The Victorian Canine Association (Championship Field Trial for Pointers and Setters).
Irish Setters have a very consistent winning record both in Victoria and interstate over recent years and there are dogs around with excellent working backgrounds in their pedigrees.
An Irish Setter, F.T.Ch. Gamemaster Grouse, owned by Rod Ayres from NSW won the National Championship last year. Last year a UK Field trial Champion, Johnsmae Startime of Erinvale (imp UK) was in Australia and served three top field trial bitches that now have puppies on the ground. With pups currently available, this is a unique opportunity for anybody wanting a top setter gundog. He has now gone to New Zealand to field trial enthusiasts, John and Robyn Gaskin.
As the organiser of field trials for the Club, I invite any person interested in seeing Irish Setters working in the field or seeking information on the sport to contact me.
